Austin, TX, September 14, 2021 – NAI Partners today announced that it has arranged a 20,647-sq.-ft. build-to-suit industrial food manufacturing space lease in Taylor, TX, for Afia, a Mediterranean food company headquartered in Austin, Texas. Afia is expected to move into the expanded facility in early 2022.
NAI Partners’ Troy Martin represented Afia in the transaction. Darren Quick with Don Quick & Associates represented the landlord.
“Afia’s story is remarkable—from a kitchen in Syria, to a farmer’s market in Austin, and now to stores across the nation, the company has been about infusing the meals of its past with modern flavors, and nourishing the Austin community every step of the way,” said Mr. Martin. “It’s been a true pleasure, both professionally and personally, to work with the Sibai family—my family and I are avid consumers of their Kibbeh, and are delighted to see their products at H-E-B week in and week out.”
Added Mr. Martin, “The food and beverage manufacturing scene in Austin is amazingly dynamic, and it is an honor to help growing consumer packaged goods companies like Afia achieve their dreams.”
Launched in 2017, Afia has experienced tremendous growth, increasing distribution by 340% year over year in 2021, securing its first round of $1MM in financing, achieving $1MM in sales after only two years with first retail partner, H-E-B, and unveiling new packaging design and brand identity. The food brand launched its sixth SKU, Sun-dried Tomato Falafel, in August – and added several new retailers that same month.
Afia was founded by Farrah Moussallati Sibai, who is of Syrian and British descent, with her husband, Yassin Sibai, using recipes from a little black book of family recipes that her mother-in-law rescued when she fled to America during the war in Syria in 2014. Moussallati Sibai herself had endured immense personal tragedy and great loss before starting over in Austin and missed the flavors of home. During this time, she quickly saw the importance that food played for so many people as a connection to home — and set out to introduce the American consumer to updated Mediterranean favorites, using quality, whole food ingredients.
“We came up with the idea for Afia five years ago after being unable to find the delicious foods we grew up with in our local grocery stores,” said Afia Founder and President Farrah Moussallati Sibai. “My family quickly got to work developing falafel and kibbeh using my mother-in-law’s little black book of generations of old Syrian family recipes.
Added Moussallati Sibai, “As we have continued to grow and look to double our retail distribution again in 2021, it became clear we would need a new manufacturing facility specifically tailored to our needs. Working with Troy and NAI Partners made that process as easy as could be, and we’re excited to be able to meet the demands of our expanding customer base.”
Afia is available at 900 retail locations nationwide including Amazon, Bristol Farms, Farmhouse Delivery, H-E-B, Mother’s Market, Sunbasket, Walmart and on Afiafoods.com.
